Video Technology

The research internship will take place in Bell Labs Antwerp, more precisely in the Video Technologies team of the Fixed Access department. This group performs research on disruptive future immersive television technologies. The intern will work closely with members of the team.

Brief description of the current internship opportunities are listed below:

1/ Research Topic: Interactive and Adaptive Streaming for Beyond HD Panoramic Content

The work consists of a combination of theoretical research and practical realization of a software prototype. This work is intended to result in one or multiple technical reports for submission to an international conference/journal.

Your main responsibilities will include:

You will work together within our research team with the help of a coach. Your responsibilities will be focused on the following research topic, which deals with interactive and adaptive video streaming for beyond HD and Panoramic content.
Today, in-network multimedia live personalization often boils down to adapting the multimedia quality and bitrate so that network quality variations do not affect the quality of experience (QoE). This usually requires the use of layered (such as H.264 SVC) or multiple description video codecs and adaptive transport mechanisms such as, e.g., HTTP adaptive streaming. New challenges are posed now by immersive omni-directional camera devices with beyond HD resolution content. This new kind of multimedia enables the user to navigate into the video scene panorama as in a video game. The adaptation process has then to deal with much higher data rate and low-latency interactivity requests. Finding innovative and disruptive ways for offering a personalized streaming under these demanding constraints is at the core of the research to be done during this internship.
This topic can be tailored to the candidate skills and background.

Your main challenges will be:

Working autonomously but together with the team. You will have to implement a software prototype for testing different tracks related to this research topic as well as running extensive but relevant simulations. The expected outcome is a technical report that will be the basis for submission to an international conference/journal.

Required Skill: Master Degree in Engineering with skills in C/C++ and in image/video processing. Having started a Ph.D. and/or having published in International Conferences or Journals on topics related to image or video compression and processing is an asset.

2/ Research Topic: Computer Vision for Immersive Video applications

In our research department new algorithms and technologies are developed for making end-to-end video systems more intelligent. As such we create highly innovative applications for video communication and IPTV, which offer a better immersive feeling towards the end-users.

Research areas of interest are:

  • 3D multiview systems
  • Object (class) recognition
  • Action recognition
  • Texture synthesis and super-resolution
  • Self-organizing camera networks

Your main challenges will be:

Working autonomously but together with the team, you will create a new computer vision function, which will provide a new immersive video experience to the end-user. The work consists of a combination of theoretical research and practical realization of a research prototype. The expected outcome is a technical report that will be the basis for submission to an international conference/journal.

Required Skill: Master Degree in Engineering with skills in C/C++ and in image/video processing. Having started a Ph.D. and/or having published in International Conferences or Journals on topics related to computer vision or video processing.
